In Windows 95, passwords are encrypted before being sent over the network. However, the network password for the user who is currently logged on to the Windows 95-based computer is stored temporarily in memory in an unencrypted format.
Using detailed knowledge of Windows 95 internal memory structures, it may be possible to write a program that runs in Windows 95 and reads the password for the currently logged-on user from memory.
If you are running Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 or 2.1 (version 4.00.950 B), download the Secupd2.exe file.

Windows 95 Update Prevents Sending Clear-Text Password Over Net
Using a program specifically designed for such a purpose, it may be possible to force a Windows 95-based computer running the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks to send a user's logon name and password across the network in a clear-text format, instead of the normal encrypted format. It may then be possible to intercept and read that password using such a program.

SYMPTOMS
When you run Windows 95 OEM Service Release version 2.1 on a computer equipped with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) host adapter, the computer may stop responding (hang) in the following situations:
•\tIf you disable the USB Root Hub device in Device Manager while PC Card sockets are enabled, the computer may hang or a "Fatal Exception 0E" error message may occur.
•\tIf you suspended and resume the computer while a Logitech USB mouse is attached, the computer may never finish the resume operation.
•\tIf you rapidly plug and unplug an ALPS USB game pad, the computer may hang or display a fatal exception error message on a blue screen.
•\tOn a Toshiba portable computer equipped with USB support, if the PC Card controller is set to CardBus mode, and the computer is docked to a port replicator, the computer may hang when you eject it (undock) from the port replicator.

Symptoms
On a computer running Microsoft Windows 95 (all releases) using the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol, the following error message may occur when certain data is received over the network:
Fatal exception 0E at 0028:>address> in VxD MSTCP(01) + 000041AE.
This was called from 0028:>address> in VxD NDIS(01) + 00000D7C.
After this error message occurs, the computer may not receive further network data until Windows is restarted.
Cause
This error message can occur if certain, very specific, "out-of-band" data packets are deliberately sent to the server during a TCP/IP session.
Resolution
This issue is resolved by the following updated files for Windows 95 (all releases):
Vtcp.386 version 4.00.0954 (dated 05/20/97) and later
Vnbt.386 version 4.00.0959 (dated 05/15/97) and later

Possible Database File Damage When Data Is Appended
Symptoms
Database programs running in Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) or 2.1 (OSR 2.1) over a Microsoft network may damage the database.
Cause
When a program uses the GetFileSize() API to get the size of an existing file on a Microsoft networking server (such as a Windows NT-based server), the Client for Microsoft Networks may not return the correct file size. When the program then attempts to write additional information to the end of the file, it may overwrite existing data instead.
This problem has been observed only with the version of the Client for Microsoft Networks (Vredir.vxd) included with OSR2 (version 4.00.1111) and later.
This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 OSR2:

Computers running Windows NT or Windows 95 may stop responding (hang) when they receive corrupted Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) datagram fragments from a client.
